Learning analytics in online learning: trying hard but need to do better

There is a value in analysing the massive amounts of data that are digitally generated in online teaching and learning. But the analysis must be driven by valid measurements of learning, by learning theory and hypotheses based on prior knowledge of how learning develops, and most of all by a concern for the values of education.
