I Quit Teaching Because of ChatGPT

This fall marks my first in nearly 20 years without teaching, as I left academia largely due to the impact of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT. Despite my efforts to teach students the importance of writing as a thinking process, many opted for AI shortcuts, diminishing the depth of their engagement with the material. The integration of AI in academic writing, while potentially useful, led to a growing disconnection between students and the creative, intellectual rigor of the writing process.
